As more couples enjoy traveling together before marriage, post-nuptial and married travel isn’t what it once was. According to a study produced by Westin Hotels & Resorts, the trend of couples marrying later is leading to more newlyweds traveling more places in less time, more luxuriously and more actively.

As Americans take fewer vacation days, many married couples choose to fit as many destinations into as few days as possible. They are also choosing to stay closer to home and using funds to enjoy more intensive itineraries, rather than spend hefty budgets on airfare and travel costs. When it comes to honeymoons, in fact, 75 percent of couples are choosing to stay within the United States and Canada, and trips to Canada have tripled while trips to the mountains of the Western United States have quadrupled among married North American travelers.

More couples are also looking toward wellness travel. Adventure activities, spa visits, trips to the gym and healthy dining options are all becoming priorities. When asked why, 50 percent of newlyweds polled say it makes a trip more memorable, while 40 percent say staying active in their destination allows them to decompress and be a tourist simultaneously.

The study polled more than 4,000 married North American residents with household incomes of $50,000–500,000.
