Winner of the World Tourism Organization 2012 Ulysses Award for Innovation in Public Policy and Governance, the unique program offers tourists first-hand experience of life in a traditional village in Malaysia.
Tourists live with a local family in a kampung (village) house where they learn about close-knit family relationships, enjoy home-cooked food and discover the simple country lifestyle. Participating villages are carefully screened and must comply with strict guidelines set by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia. To date, there are more than 3,000 approved homestay operators in 159 villages around the country.
Every homestay presents a different experience. Visitors to the Kampung Seri Tanjung homestay in Melaka learn about the area’s Dutch and Portuguese influence while those who choose the Desa Wang Tok Rendong and Pulau Tuba in Langkawi will get a taste of Malaysian island life.
