Lufthansa fitted new LED lighting technology on its Airbus A350-900 aircraft to offer passengers 24 lighting scenarios.

The carrier’s new Airbus aircraft recently entered commercial service on its route between Munich (MUC) and Delhi (DEL) and is the first airline to use a range of different settings for on-board lighting. The lighting is designed to fit with the day- and night-time biorhythms of its passengers and will also emulate a pleasant restaurant atmosphere during mealtimes.

“The well-being of our passengers is of particular importance to us,” said Reinhold Huber, customer experience, Lufthansa. “So it represents a real milestone for us that we can now achieve these improvements with this innovative lighting technology.”

The first 10 A350-900s delivered to the carrier will be based at Munich and will offer 293 seats: 48 in business class, 21 in premium economy and 224 in economy.

The Boeing 747-800 aircraft will also undergo a refit with the new lighting system.

“Warm light for relaxation is supplied during periods of rest, whereas cooler light provides stimulation for more active phases,” said Lufthansa. “The lighting moods have been developed in collaboration with lighting designers from Kardorff Ingenieure in Berlin and are based on findings from research in the field of chronobiology and on known effects of our day- and night-time biorhythms.”
