The 17th performance season of Montréal En Lumiére is set to get underway Feb. 18, 2016, and the lineup is dazzling. The theme is the treasures of China, with Shenzhen the featured city. To that end, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra will perform Feb. 18, with conductor Muhai Tang in a program of Chinese and European classical works celebrating the Chinese New Year. This season’s noteworthy premiers include Betty Bonifassi with a contemporary reading of slave chants and folk-rock group Will Driving West presenting their third album, Fly.
Also slated: jazz pianist Thomas Encho; Tanya Tagaq accompanying a screening of the classic 1922 film Nanook of the North by Robert Flaherty; saxophonist Yannick Rieu; Keith Kouna’s adaptation of Franz Schubert’s Le voyage d’hiver; Canadian singer-songwriter Calum Graham; contemporary jazz performer Laila Biali; Daniel Taylor and the Theatre of Early Music presenting Four Thousand Winter; Complete Bach cantatas performed by Studio de Musique Ancienne de Montréal; Race by David Mamet at Théâtre Jean-Duceppe; On This Day by Alexandria Haber at the Centaur Theatre; Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía; and Circus Incognitus by Jamie Adkins.
