Culinary travel is all the rage, but we’ll bet these places aren’t on your radar. Exploring food traditions from different perspectives, each of these quirky locations will give you plenty to chew on.
At the Butter Museum in Cork, Ireland, you can enjoy a butter-making demonstration and learn why Irish butter is the country’s most important export. Located in the Shandon neighborhood, the museum has a gallery with exhibits of traditional butter-making equipment that tells Ireland’s fabulously successful butter story and dairy industry tale through an audio-visual presentation. The city was the site of the powerful Cork Butter Market and Cork Butter Exchange; among the museum exhibits are a keg of butter that’s 1,000 years old, plus a fascinating, beautifully illustrated butter wrapper collection.
Founded by former Assistant Attorney General for the State of Wisconsin Barry Levenson, the National Mustard Museum in Middleton, Wisconsin, boasts 6,090 mustards gathered from all 50 states and more than 70 countries. Exhibitions include the Gibbons Collection of mustard pots, antique mustard tins, beautiful mustard jars and vintage advertisements. Can’t get there? The National Mustard Museum has a Mustard Blog series accessible via its website that includes recipes, news and yes — even mustard advice.
You’ll know without a doubt you’ve arrived at the Canadian Potato Museum in O’Leary, Canada, when you pull up in front of the giant potato at the entrance. The museum is located on Prince Edward Island, and includes a huge collection of potato-related farming machinery and implements. The grounds also house the Heritage Chapel, the Log Barn, the Little Red Schoolhouse and the Telephone Switchboard Office. Once you’ve finished looking around, head to the Potato Country Kitchen, where you can make your own potato fudge or enjoy a meal of lobster-topped spuds, traditional poutine, PEI potato soup or seaweed pie.
