Cape Cod’s quaint Chatham Bars Inn entices aspiring home gardeners and cooks to learn the art of harnessing the harvest at its hands-on farm workshops taking place at its eight-acre farm in nearby Brewster this spring and summer.
Led by Chatham Bars Inn’s own farm manager, Joshua Schiff, upcoming farm workshops include:
- Designing the Perfect Kitchen Garden: A comprehensive course on designing and maintaining a backyard garden, offering participants the chance to plant and take home an entire flat of vegetables, on Saturday, May 16, 12–3 p.m.
- Summer Vegetable Gardening in Cape Cod: Strategies, techniques and materials required to maintain a productive summer garden in a challenging coastal climate are taught on Sunday, May 24, 12–3 p.m. Participants receive a special selection of summer vegetables designed to thrive in their gardens.
- Harnessing the Power of the Soil Food Web: Attendees learn about soil biology, composting, vermiculture and aerating compost tea and leaves with the knowledge required to make their own compost and brew compost tea. The program is taking place Sunday, June 14 12–3 p.m., and Sunday, June 28 12–3 p.m.
- Planting the Perfect Fall Garden: In addition to receiving fall crops to plant in their own gardens, attendees learn how to plant and maintain a beautiful and productive fall garden on Sunday, July 12 12–3 p.m., and Sunday, July 19 12–3 p.m.
- Achieving the Four Season Harvest: Participants are taught how to extend their harvest well into the winter months and receive a flat of cold-hardy vegetables starts to plant in their garden for winter harvest on Sunday, Aug. 16 12–3 p.m.
Workshops are $75 per person, per session, and advance sign-up is required.
The historic hotel also introduces a Farm Share program, available June 13–Oct. 31, providing participants with a full season’s worth of organic fare for purchase. Spring vegetables include arugula, heirloom lettuce, pea shoots, kale, Swiss chard, cilantro and parsley. Mid-summer, participants will enjoy shares including heirloom tomatoes, grape tomatoes, English and pickling cucumbers, heirloom snap beans, eggplants, summer squash, Tuscan kale, basil, beets and rainbow carrots.
A full season share of 20 boxes costs $700 ($35 per box) while a half share of 10 boxes is $400 ($40 per box). Advance sign-up is required. The produce at Chatham Bars Inn Farm is 100 percent GMO free and is sustainably grown using organic principles.
