LAX broke ground last week on a new airport concourse that will be attached to the existing Tom Bradley International Terminal.

The Midfield Satellite Concourse is the latest project at LAX, undergoing a $14 billion modernization program including revamped terminals and a new connector building.

The new concourse, set to open in 2019, will be a five-story, 750,000-square-foot expansion featuring 12 new gates, two of which will handle megajets such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-8. The new concourse will attach to the Bradley Terminal via a 1,000-foot tunnel and will feature new food and retail options, as well as easy-to-follow paths from the airline gates to the federal customs station in Bradley Terminal.

The new building will include a roof designed to mimic the shape of a breaking wave, and open spaces will maximize natural light. The roof is also designed to reduce heat absorption and save water in an effort to make the concourse environmentally sustainable.

The project also revamps the existing baggage system in Bradley, which will be the largest integrated baggage carrier system in the country when it opens in late 2019.
