LATAM Airlines recently announced its new sustainability program, Recycle Your Journey. The program aims to recycle waste produced from on-board dining.
As of last week, all aluminum, glass and plastic on-board dining packaging on domestic flights in Chile is recycled. LATAM Airlines plans to extend the initiative to all its flights in Latin America gradually. The airline additionally expects to eventually move past recycling only aluminum, glass and plastic packaging. The food packaging is transported to local recycling centers following flights.
“As one of the three most sustainable airline groups in the world, we are committed to bringing about change and leading by example. [The] launch of our ‘Recycle Your Journey’ program on domestic flights in Chile represents just the first step towards the introduction of on-board recycling across our network,” said Ignacio Cueto, president, LATAM Airlines Group. “Without the support and willingness of our passengers and the commitment of our cabin crew, on-board recycling is not possible.”
LATAM Airlines projects the program to result in 20 tons of waste recycled by the end of the year. By the end of 2020, the company expects to recycle more than 55 tons of on-board waste per year.
