La Cantera Hill Country Resort Review

eFlyer Reviews

Perched on one of the highest points in San Antonio, La Cantera Hill Country Resort is a short ride past rugged terrain. The rustic elegance of the King Ranch inspired the resort’s design. Natural light bounces off the glistening floors of the enormous lobby while the soft sound of Spanish guitars plays in the background. One wall of windows overlooks a stunning adults-only swimming pool.

Last year, the property temporarily closed for almost six months to undergo a multimillion-dollar expansion and renovation. Guests will find new and reimagined outdoor spaces, meeting rooms, swimming pools, restaurants and guestrooms. During our stay, signs announced more construction is underway for a new destination spa.

We checked into our deluxe room overlooking a courtyard. At nearly 400 square feet, there was ample space. The traditional design of the room was decorated in warm tones. Amenities included a pillow-top bed, bathrobe, complimentary WiFi, Keurig coffeemaker, bottled water, a mini fridge and safe. A fitness facility and several pools provide exercise options. A unique feature of the resort is the club level for ages 21 and older. The VIP treatment features complimentary valet parking, private elevator access, check-in at the club-level concierge desk, continental breakfast, midday small bites and a complimentary happy hour.

The hotel’s on-site Primero Cantina offers a casual dining option with 22 televisions for sports enthusiasts. Each entrée on the menu lists a suggested tequila pairing. SweetFire Kitchen, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, focuses on regional home-style cuisine, with many dishes cooked in the fire-roasted oven. For a small bite to accompany a cocktail, Bocado provides delicious charcuterie adjacent to the masculine Sire Bar located at the back of the lobby. A morning pastry or late afternoon coffee can be enjoyed at Henrietta’s Market — don’t miss the intimate outdoor seating with a softly gurgling fountain. The fire pits and stunning hillside views at the City View Terrace, an outdoor bar, provided one of our favorite spots to relax.

The 550-acre resort boasts two golf courses and La Cantera Golf Academy offers lessons. At the foot of the resort is the Shops at La Cantera, an upscale outdoor shopping center landscaped with indigenous plants and sculpted water features. Pick up a bauble at Neiman Marcus. Families will enjoy the close proximity to Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Sea World. The world-famous San Antonio River Walk is approximately a 20-minute drive. History buffs will, of course, want to see the San Antonio Missions, newly designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

La Cantera is a member of Destination Hotels and an AAA Four Diamond property. The staff was friendly and the service outstanding. Our weekend stay in this superb San Antonio resort left us relaxed and recharged.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
