Adventure travelers and safari enthusiasts have a new way to enjoy Kenya’s natural beauty and wildlife (especially rhinos and their protection): JW Marriott recently opened JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp in Solio Game Reserve, Laikipia, Kenya. Situated between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges, the new, wellness-focused safari experience invites guests to slow down, reset and connect with the wonders of the reserve’s flora and fauna.
The property spans 19 tented suites, including a two-bedroom suite, each set discreetly for privacy and sweeping views of Mount Kenya, the Aberdare Mountains, nearby waterholes or open savannah. Roll-up canvas walls create a fluid transition between interior and exterior, while generous outdoor living areas offer private decks and plunge pools. Indoor freestanding baths are also available for moments of reflection. Furnishings and artwork are sourced from Kenyan artisans, including Kitengela Glass, Safari Bronze and Ceramiqa.
Shared spaces include Map Room, featuring a detailed map of the conservancy and serving as the gathering point to play each day, library and games room, and a retail boutique showcasing contemporary Kenyan art and craft. Dining at the property celebrates seasonality. Ingredients are sourced from the on-site garden, which also serves as a dedicated dining setting via The Garden Table, an imitate, multicourse experience.
The camp’s signature restaurant, Mavuno, showcases dishes shaped by Kenyan flavors, global influences and open-fire cooking, while Ember Bar and Lounge is a fireside space for relaxed drinks and sharing plates. There’s also a dedicated wine room for bespoke tastings of wines. Beyond the camp, guests can enjoy bush dining experiences, as well as foodie experiences like bread-making and Kenyan cooking classes.
The Spa by JW boasts a curated menu of treatments rooted in regional healing traditions and highland botanicals, incorporating products from Kenyan skincare brand Jani. The signature Solio Passage is a signature experience taking half a day and designed as a complete reset. The camp is also home to a fitness center, outdoor pool and quiet spaces.
The property operates within Solio Game Reserve and prioritizes conservation and responsible tourism. The reserve spans 45,000 acres and has been recognized for its longstanding role in rhino conservation and home to one of Africa’s largest populations of both black and white rhinos, alongside leopards, lions, waterbuck, zebras and more.
Guests can take an education visit to Solio Rhino Orphanage for insight into the conservation efforts underpinning the reserve. The camp also contributes to many locally driven initiatives through Lazizi Welfare Foundation, and supports the conservancy-led Solio Women’s Empowerment Project.
The camp is about a four-hour drive from Nairobi.

Sep 9, 2026The Return of Gateside Goodbyes? New TSA Program Lets Non-Flyers Past Security
It was once a distant memory: walking with loved ones to their gate to see them off, waving goodbye and watching their plane take off. This all ended after Sept. 11, 2001, in which greater security measures were put in place to account for each and every person who goes through security checkpoints. The Transportation Security Administration was established two months after the terrorist attack to prevent other hijackings, creating a unified federal administration to screen bags and passengers. Before, it was up to the individual airlines to hire their own security for screenings.
