JetBlue Flight 243 made history last week as the first Havana-bound commercial flight from the New York metro area in more than 50 years. The airline also launched its first-ever flights from Orlando (MCO) and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport this week, putting JetBlue at nearly 50 weekly flights between the United States and Cuba.
The new service to Havana’s José Martí International Airport departs from three focus cities, with the first flying from New York (JFK), the second from Orlando and the third from Fort Lauderdale (FLL).
“This inaugural flight between New York and Havana is a milestone in this new era of progress between our two nations, and another tangible result of this state’s successful trade mission to Cuba,” said New York governor Andrew Cuomo. “I congratulate JetBlue on this landmark accomplishment, which will help further ties and strengthen the economic relationship between New York and Cuba.”
The New York metropolitan area is home to the second-largest Cuban-American population in the United States, making the new route an important one for the airline. The launch of the Havana service also marks JetBlue’s 100th destination in 22 countries. The airline now serves four cities in Cuba: Santa Clara (SNU), Havana (HAV), Camagüey (CMW) and Holguín (HOG).
