The dark days of winter don’t stand a chance Jan. 29–Feb. 14, when the annual Carnaval de Québec fills Québec City with music and celebration. First held in 1894, the city’s winter carnival reached official status in 1954. During its two-week run this year, more than 200 activities will be offered, including a Night Parade in Charlesbourg, Giant Human Bowling, hydro-sliding down frozen slopes in inner tubes and a themed Bonhomme’s Ice Palace on display in front of the Parliament Building.
A festival highlight is the CMQ Canoe Race. This year, more than 50 teams from Canada, France and the United States will compete in ice canoes on a course over the frozen St. Lawrence River between Quebec City and Levis. There’s also the 43rd consecutive International Snow Sculpture Event, with gigantic creations built from snow and ice on display. Public voting takes place on Jan. 30 to select the year’s favorites in several categories. The carnival’s official website offers ideas for itineraries to help visitors get the most out of their carnival experience.
