It’s a Small, Small World in Times Square

Big Apple bound? While you’re there, plan a visit to Gulliver’s Gate, a fascinating new $40 million entertainment option that’s a scaled-down recreation of some of the world’s most iconic places. Amazing technology includes a fully functioning miniature airport with planes actually taxiing, taking off and landing. It encompasses an entire city block in Times Square, where the new 1,500-square-foot model of a modern airport is only one of the features created by head model designer Adrian Davies. There are also reams of highways, roads, tunnels, bridges and railroad tracks with fully functioning trains traversing routes through mountains, villages and cityscapes. Upon completion, Gulliver’s Gate will boast 1,000 trains and approximately 12,000 train wagons.

To date, completed exhibits include New York City, Latin America, Asia and Europe. The New York City exhibit is a breathtaking recreation of familiar locations, from Grand Central Station and Central Park to the Empire State Building and neighborhoods filled with cafés, hotels and pizzerias. Everywhere, the city’s energy was painstakingly modeled, down to the cars, trains and figures of people, including a tightrope walker straddling the space between chandeliers in Grand Central Station.

In Latin America, there’s a watery replica of Argentina’s Iguazu Falls; a working Panama Canal afloat with freighters negotiating actual functioning locks; the ancient sites of Machu Picchu and Chichen Itza; the bustling city of Valparaiso, Chile; and Buenos Aires’ famous La Boca district. Move on to the Middle East and discover the Chords Bridge leading into Jerusalem, where well-known landmarks, including the Western Wall, Dome of the Rock and the Via Dolorosa, were recreated in intricate detail. Within Asia, visitors can marvel at the Shanghai Global Financial Center, built using 3D printing; China’s Great Wall and Forbidden City; the Taj Mahal; Angkor Wat; and the vivid landscapes of Vietnam and Malaysia. Instantly recognizable landmarks in the Europe exhibit — built in 137 days by 31 model makers — include the Dolomites, Norway’s sparkling fjords, Pisa’s tilting tower, the Colossus of Rhodes, Mount Olympus and Austria’s Danube Tower.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.

Why Japan Is Best Explored by Sea with Princess

Japan is a destination that rewards repeat visits because no two regions — or seasons —  feel quite the same. One moment, you’re wandering through centuries-old geisha districts in Kanazawa. The next, you’re watching neon reflections dance across Tokyo streets long after midnight.

Review: InterContinental Barcelona

When searching for a place to stay in Barcelona, I was picky. I wanted a well-situated hotel to access all the city has to offer and to serve as a respite from the hustle and bustle of the Spanish hot spot. My search led me to InterContinental Barcelona.
