As the sixth riot in France comes to an end, the country struggles to recover from a recent slew of riots that resulted from the June 27 police shooting of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk during a traffic stop in Paris.
Since then, protests across some of France’s largest cities, including Paris, erupted. As President Emmanuel Macron holds crisis talks, efforts to maintain control remain up in the air. And with hundreds of arrests made across Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Grenoble, Lillie and Toulouse, as well as cars on fire and shops looted, travelers might wonder if the country is currently safe to visit.
So far, several European governments warned respective citizens to be mindful of changes and unforeseeable riots. Governments and foreign offices advise travelers to keep a close eye on the media and avoid areas where riots are taking place.
Additionally, travelers should expect disruptions to road travel, as local transport options might be reduced. For instance, buses and trams in some cities have stopped at 9 p.m. to avoid being targeted by protesters.
The U.S. State Department urges citizens to also avoid trouble hot spots, while the U.S. Embassy warns these riots will most likely continue and could turn violent.
That said, there’s no need to cancel upcoming trips to France. Should travelers plan to visit the country in the coming weeks, be flexible with evening plans and restaurant bookings should something unpredictable happen.
For example, on July 1, police evacuated both tourists and rioters from the Champs-Elysees. So far, Parisian suburbs most affected by both peaceful and violent protests are Nanterre, Bezons, Gennevilliers, Garges-lès-Gonesse, Asnières-sur-Seine, Montreuil, Neuilly-sur-Marne, Clamart, Meudon, Trappes, Clergy, Guyancourt, Vigneux-sur-Seine and L’Île-St.-Denis. Should travelers encounter trouble or riots on the outskirts of the city, they’re urged to remain within city center.
Travelers can also opt for smaller villages where there’s been largely no riots. Travelers within Paris can err on the side of caution by opting for indoor activities and avoiding late-night activities, as this is when the majority of riots occur.
As of the time of publication, there have been no reported cases of rioters attacking members of the public or tourists.
