A hyperloop project between Beijing and Shanghai was proposed recently by Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Inc., a U.S.-based company specializing in supersonic transportation systems, according to China Daily.
The concept of the hyperloop project involves passengers travelling in a low-pressure tube at the speed of sound, enabling them to journey between Beijing and Shanghai in a significantly shorter amount of time.
Transportation time between the two cities, set about 1,500 kilometres apart, takes about two hours via airplane. Travel time via hyperloop would cut the journey in half to one hour.
“Each tube can transport 24 million people a year and we plan to have seven tubes. Basically we can transport seven times more people from Beijing to Shanghai than flights,” said Bibop G. Gresta, deputy chairman, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Inc., at the Global Innovator Conference in Beijing.
In February, the company announced a passenger version of the hyperloop in Quay Valley, Calif., with construction expected to begin in mid-2016 and completion slated for the third quarter of 2018.
