San Antonio attracts some 36 million visitors each year. One of the biggest draws, the scenic River Walk, is a pedestrian promenade with restaurants, bars and shops. The Hyatt Regency, a AAA Four Diamond property, sits in the heart of the festivities.

A soaring atrium lobby with walls of windows looks out on the dense greenery of the bustling River Walk. Whisking up the 16-floor, glass-enclosed elevator gives the best views of the river, which appears to be inside the hotel.

Our king accessible guestroom evoked a modern masculine vibe with a gray and white, geometric-patterned carpet; massive, 65-inch flat-screen television; leather chair; and 4-foot-high headboard. Amenities we appreciated included complimentary WiFi, mini fridge, coffeemaker and desk. The large bathroom allowed good turning radius for a wheelchair.

A dedicated elevator on the first floor provided easy access to the River Walk — located 20 feet below street level. Strolling the lushly landscaped paths and bridges, we stopped to sip margaritas at a restaurant with outdoor seating and listened to mariachi music.

Less than a block from the hotel lies the legendary Alamo. Instead of wasting time driving, we hopped aboard a VIA Metropolitan Transit bus. The VIVA Passport route takes riders to 20 popular attractions. We journeyed to the McNay Art Museum; the San Antonio Botanical Garden; and the Pearl, a mixed-use development with shopping, entertainment and dining. Be sure to make a reservation at Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery. The Gulf red fish was the best we’ve ever eaten.

After consulting with the hotel’s helpful concierge, we spent each day exploring San Antonio. Before heading out, we purchased kolaches (sausages wrapped in dough) at the hotel’s lobby-level coffee shop, MKT.PLACE. No matter how many times we visit San Antonio, we never tire of the River Walk, and the Hyatt Regency makes an excellent home base.
