From the Moxi restaurant, with its fresh take on the farm-to-table concept, to the contemporary designed 32 rooms and suites, which include textured wood and cool marble flooring, the entire interior of Hotel Matilda is set against a backdrop of earthy colors — cream, brown and beige —  with pops of turquoise throughout. There is a 150-year-old millstone located in the hotel’s lobby, and much of the colorful, eclectic artwork on site alludes to Mexican history.

Located in the 500-year-old city of San Miguel de Allende, Hotel Matilda is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a member of Design Hotels. The property began to attract a younger crowd as soon as it opened in 2010 in a beautifully restored 1800-era building. With room rates from $280 for standard deluxe rooms to $469 for a deluxe suite, many of today’s guests are looking for green-friendly, gourmet-oriented, art-filled boutique properties like The Matilda.

This year, the property hosts its second annual, six-course Cena Erótica Valentine’s Day at the indoor/outdoor Moxi. Priced at 3,500 pesos (about $168) per person, the dinner will include entrees like roast duck breast, sumac jus and roasted root vegetables, as well as vegetable tortellini, carrot jus, roasted onion and the Japanese umeboshi. The hotel also hosts a big Cena Negra dinner each year to celebrate the Day of the Dead.
