According to new data compiled by Skyscanner, snagging the best deal on flights may not require as much pre-planning as previously thought. The data, compiled from the booking site’s more than 50 million users and their travel last fall and winter, show savings for flights, particularly for holiday travel, are at their highest no more than four weeks prior to travel dates. “Americans left a record-breaking 658 million unused vacation days on the table last year alone, and we are committed to making travel more attainable, especially around the holidays. We prepare this data in the hopes of helping travelers see that holiday travel is something they can budget for and plan with ease so they can spend their well-earned time off with loved ones,” said Randi Wolfson, head of communications, the Americas, Skyscanner. For Thanksgiving travel, the site recommends waiting to book the very last week of October, when potential savings rise to 7.7 percent, the highest available for travel the third week of November. Those who wait until the last minute find savings drop to a little less than 2 percent. While traveling for Thanksgiving, don’t forget to book your Christmas flights. The data shows Thanksgiving week is the best time to book late-December travel, earning passengers peak savings of 6.41 percent. The next-best week to book is the first week in December, when savings are a little under 5 percent. New Year’s travel is best booked the first week of December, when travelers can find savings up to 10 percent or more. Afterward, savings fall, but last-minute decision-makers can still enjoy savings of 6.72 percent only a week prior. When Skyscanner surveyed Twitter users on their holiday flight booking habits, it found 44 percent book travel at least six months in advance, 17 percent book three to five months before and 39 percent book less than six weeks in advance.
