Helsinki’s Senate Square has been the location of New Year’s Eve celebrations since 1932, and Dec. 31, of this year will be every bit as exciting as past years, with live music and plenty of fireworks.
On the small city island of Uunisaari — walkable from city center via a pontoon bridge — a program of holiday events includes a traditional Finnish sauna, Christmas dinner and a music concert experience Dec. 10. Additional holiday saunas will be held Dec. 27 and Jan. 3, along with a two-day New Year’s Market Jan. 2–3 featuring design, handicrafts and vintage wares.
From Jan. 6–10, the Lux Helsinki light festival throws light into the darkest part of the year with massive light installations by international light and media artists. The event is free.
