Following a three-year hiatus for renovations, Hawaii Island’s historic Volcano House is set to reopen in late June with luxury fittings, enhanced sustainable operating practices and serious safety upgrades. Hosting guests since 1846 — and the only hotel actually located within Volcanoes National Park — Volcano House lies within the UNESCO World Heritage site on Halema’uma’u Crater next to Kilauea Volcano.
Views from the 33 guestrooms dramatically underline the contrasting landscape, which runs the gamut from lush rainforest to the smoking rim of the volcano’s caldera. In the dining room, crater views compete for attention with a menu of locally sourced Hawaiian fare. Embark on a day hike along Napau Trail to witness Kilauea’s spectacular eruptions, or relax in the resort’s lounge with a refreshingly chilled Lava Flow cocktail.
