Havila Voyages announced groundbreaking plans for its first climate-neutral cruise this fall. The hybrid Norwegian cruise line aims to use 100 percent biogas and its ships’ largest battery packs on a round-trip voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes.

Bent Martini, CEO, Havila Voyages, stressed how stricter environmental requirements are fully achievable with today’s technology, “Technology exists, and the opportunities are there. It’s about the willingness to make the necessary investments. With strict environmental requirements from the authorities, those who want to operate the coastal route will be forced to deliver.”
The cruise line is currently working with suppliers to secure sufficient volumes to fill its tanks with 100 percent biogas.
“That would mean that one of our ships, already this fall, could prove that it is possible to sail over 5,000 nautical miles, the entire Coastal Route Bergen – Kirkenes – Bergen, climate neutrally,” Martini added.

Following the inaugural climate-neutral cruise, Havila Voyages hopes to explore this program across all four of its sustainable ships, further solidifying its dedication and innovation in eco-cruising. Looking further ahead, Havila Voyages also plans to implement these practices on all future new-build ships.
