The sunlight sparkled on the water as we drove into Biloxi. We planned a leisurely 24-hour visit that included a stop at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art, currently showcasing the works of the Mad Potter of Biloxi.
After exploring the museum, we drove less than a mile and checked in to our wheelchair-accessible suite at Harrah’s Gulf Coast. An extra-long credenza separated a king-sized bed from a seating area. Each side of the suite featured a 49-inch, flat-screen television. The sofa sleeper and chairs can easily seat five. Additional amenities included a wet bar with a mini fridge, two bathrobes, an in-room safe, free WiFi and coffeemaker. The large bathroom equipped with a roll-in shower provided ample space for a power wheelchair.
Our fourth-floor windows overlooked the Gulf of Mexico and the outdoor heated pool, where guests can lounge in cabanas. One of the advantages to a Southern destination is the mild temperature in the fall and winter.
The hotel has a fitness center next door to the 16,000-square-foot Bellissimo Salon and Spa. Guests are invited to arrive early and unwind in the wet room or aromatherapy/sauna prior to spa appointments. Jim relaxed and meditated during a 50-minute massage while I treated myself to a manicure.
Next on our itinerary was a romantic dinner at the Magnolia House by Kelly English, a James Beard Award semifinalist. English was also named a Best New Chef by Food and Wine Magazine. The upscale restaurant provides excellent service, and an impressive menu focuses on fresh seafood and steaks. The crab cake appetizers and a glass of wine could almost be a meal, so we shared a delicious steak. The intimate space invites conversation and we lingered over coffee and dessert — Grandma’s Bacon Bread Pudding came topped with spiced pecans, bourbon sauce and vanilla ice cream.
The main attraction to Harrah’s is the casino. The 33,000 square feet of gaming features 800 of the newest slot machines, 35 gaming tables and a sports wagering venue. Before trying your luck, sign up for the Caesars Rewards.
In the morning, we visited the resort’s gift shop and picked up a few Saint’s coffee tumblers — they make great stocking stuffers. We ate a late breakfast at Mix and Mingle, an indoor and outdoor sports bar and grill. Kick off the day with a Bloody Mary, an omelet, pancakes or an item from the large selection of à la carte items.
The Harrah’s Gulf Coast hotel underwent a $14 million renovation just three years ago. The property’s updated décor, dining options, spa services, casino and friendly staff make for a fun getaway in coastal Mississippi.
