Any concerns about the strength of the tourism industry in Greece in the wake of its economic and political upheaval can be put to rest: The country posted its best year ever for tourism in 2015, with a record 23.5 million visitors. And here’s more good news: 2016 is on track to best last year’s numbers, with a 10 percent rise in the number of people traveling through Greek airports in the first five months of this year. The busiest airport in the country is in Athens, naturally, which saw about 1.8 million passengers from January to May 2016. Cities in other parts of the country, like Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Heraklion and Chania, all saw big increases in traffic. Several Greek island airports have seen a rise in requests for new routes; Skiathos, Mykonos, Santorini and Kefalonia proved to be the most popular. Tourism growth doesn’t appear to be confined to the Aegean islands, though: Athens, the capital city, is expected to receive 4.5 million travelers in 2016 and has nine new hotels under construction. The healthy tourism industry in Greece can be attributed to its timeless attractions, from its history to its beautiful beaches and charming towns. But there’s also a possibility Greece is catching a windfall from the instability of some of its neighbors, like Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey. Perhaps travelers are choosing Greece for its relative stability when considering a trip in the eastern Mediterranean.
