On the heels of Google’s revamped hotel booking site comes another potential point of competition for travel search engines: alternative accommodations.
The search engine’s lodging search capabilities now extend beyond hotels and include other unique forms of accommodation, similar to sites such as Booking.com and Airbnb.
Google touts its new “vacation rentals” option as a chance for travelers to book entire properties for an extended stay, rather than a standard hotel room for only one or two nights. Such styles of accommodation include villas, apartments, cabins and houses.
Through partnerships with various booking sites like Expedia, HomeAway, Hotels.com, TripAdvisor and VRBO, Google collects property information from these sites to bring thousands of listings to searchers, with locations all over the world. Browsers can filter their searches by price, availability, amenities and view reviews and photos of each listing.
Currently, Airbnb is not a part of the new search-and-book feature, but this may change in the future.
