Chronic Google Maps users rejoice: The handy smartphone app now works offline — and it works well. Now, when you’re on rural roads without cell signal, or if you just want to turn your phone on airplane mode to conserve battery and use up significantly less data, the map function still works beautifully per Global Traveler testing.

Google made the feature available late last year, saying its maps, destination searches and turn-by-turn directions will be use-able offline, relying on your smartphone’s GPS capabilities and not the cell antenna. The feature is available on Android and iOS.

Here’s the catch: The feature works only on roads, so don’t expect to be able to use your smartphone as a GPS tracker while hiking or walking. And you have to download the map before you lose or turn off service, and these tend to be large files, sometimes a gigabyte or more. Maps can be as large as you want, up to 120,000 square kilometers, and all you have to do is zoom out as desired. This is great for international users wanting to avoid overseas data charges, as well as for in-country use where cell coverage is spotty.
