Last month, Google unleashed an update for its Google Maps app that allows you to see approximately how much it would cost to take an Uber or a taxi to your chosen destination.

The update is seen when users call up directions to a destination in the map app. As usual, Google gives transportation options like driving, biking, walking and using public transportation, with an estimate of the time it will take to arrive via each mode. The rollout started with Android, with Apple capabilities coming soon.

The update adds Uber and taxi options to the list, again with time estimates attached. Here’s how it was explained on the Google Maps blog: “In addition to our existing global ride service partner Uber, with this update we’re adding new providers across five countries: 99Taxis in Brazil, Ola Cabs in India, Hailo in the UK and Spain, mytaxi in Germany and Spain, and Gett in the UK.”

The update isn’t available worldwide, and it doesn’t apply to companies like Lyft, but it’s an exciting innovation nonetheless — especially for cab companies, who are slow to innovate and have seen their business cut into by tech- and user-friendly companies like Uber and Lyft. Now, Google is evening the playing field a bit.
