It’s every traveler’s ire: There’s in-flight WiFi, but it’s woefully inadequate, whether you’re just browsing the Internet or requiring more bandwidth for streaming a movie. This certainly happens when the WiFi is free, but it’s even more offensive if you’re paying for the privilege.

The major supplier of in-flight WiFi, Gogo, will begin using satellites for its WiFi, significantly improving speed. The company announced it received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to launch its new “2Ku” service.

Gogo previously relied on an air-to-ground system using cell phone towers, but this new service bounces separate signals for downloading and uploading via satellite, making more bandwidth available.

“Rather than physically pointing toward the target satellite, these antennas create a beam in the desired direction by mechanically rotating a series of internal plates,” Gogo wrote on its website.

Gogo already has customers lined up to upgrade to 2ku: Aeromexico and Virgin Atlantic Airways are on board, and five more airlines hope to add the service in 2017, including Delta Air Lines, which has committed to outfitting more than 250 airplanes.

“We are extremely excited by the progress we’ve made in bringing this technology to market,” said Anand Chari, chief technology officer, Gogo.
