GETTING THERE & AROUND
Reach the city through Humberto Delgado Airport, a main hub for TAP Air Portugal. The airport connects to Gare de Oriente, the main train station in Lisbon, taking about 10 minutes. Alternatively, Aeroporto Metro offers service to the city in 20 minutes. Once in the city center, the most popular way to get around is by tram, easily spotted thanks to its yellow color. Commuter trains, buses operated by Carris, ferries such as Transtejo & Sofluso, and even cycling are other options to see different parts of the city.

Alfama
Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood, Alfama is a rich and historic area comprising steep and cobbled alleys, Moorish architecture, traditional fado music, monasteries and churches, and more. The medieval Castle of São Jorge overlooks the neighborhood.

Belém Tower
Also known as the Tower of Saint Vincent, this 16th-century fortification was once the welcome and departure point for Portuguese explorers, symbolizing the country’s maritime and colonial power. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the structure is a lasting mark of Europe’s Age of Discoveries.

National Tile Museum
Ever wondered how or why Portugal has achieved such an acclaimed reputation for its tilework? This museum delves into Portugal’s intricate and patterned glazed tiles, from their origins in the 15th century to modern-day designs.

According to Barbara Rogers, foodies looking for a neighborhood experience outside the busy center can ride iconic No. 28 Tram to the end of its line in Campo de Ourique. At its heart is Mercado de Campo de Ourique, a busy market more authentic than tourist-oriented TimeOut Market in central Lisbon.
