Renowned for having the most beautiful collection of isles and cays in the world, the British Virgin Islands has long attracted travelers seeking sea, sun, surf and sand. Each of the pristine archipelago’s 60 islands boasts its own character. The largest are known for lush vegetation, luxury resorts, beautiful beaches, a friendly welcome, fantastic food and endless adventure. Located east of Puerto Rico, the territory’s four main islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada.
GETTING THERE & AROUND
The BVI has three major airports: Terence B. Lettsome Airport, Tortola; Auguste George Airport, Anegada; and Taddy Bay Airport, Virgin Gorda. Most flights to the BVI connect through another Caribbean airport, such as Puerto Rico (SJU), St. Thomas (STT), Antigua (ANU), or Sint Maarten (SXM). However, American Airlines launched direct service from Miami (MIA) to Tortola this June. Upon arrival, visitors can board water taxis, chartered boats, chartered planes or ferries to other islands. Most resorts offer ferry service or chartered flights from Tortola for arrivals earlier than 4 p.m. Be aware many resorts and businesses close during the rainy season (typically Aug. 15–Oct. 1).
