Global City Guidebook 2026

One of the most mesmerizing destinations in the world, the capital of modern-day Greece sits at the heart of what was once Ancient Greece. Known as the birthplace of Western civilization, Athens boasts a recorded history spanning 3,400 years. Here, ancient archaeological ruins coexist with modern urban design and innovation, great culture and gastronomy, and vibrant daily life, all amid incredible natural beauty and legendary sunlight in a perfect Mediterranean climate. Add top-notch hotel accommodations and the warmth of the Athenian people, and you’ll see why Athens makes an ideal city destination.

GETTING THERE & AROUND
Served by major U.S. and international airlines, Athens International Airport lies about 20 miles southeast of Athens and connects to the city center via the modern Metro (Line 3) and Express bus, as well as Suburban Railway. Six car rental companies operate at the Arrivals level of the Main Terminal Building. When it comes to exploring Athens and its major attractions, opt to travel on foot or take the Metro. Most of the attractions lie within a short walking distance of each other.

LODGING
Conrad Athens The Ilisian
Opened in May 2026, this urban luxury resort emphasizes wellness, offering outdoor and heated indoor pools, fitness training, yoga and Pilates studio, rooftop running track, saunas and steam rooms, and curated treatments inspired by ancient Greek rituals.

The Dolli at Acropolis
Enjoy 5-star amenities at this art hotel in the restored 1925 Kallimasiotis Mansion. The 46 elegant guestrooms and suites feature high ceilings, marble bathrooms and curated artwork spanning from Picasso to contemporary Greek artists. A rooftop pool, restaurant, fitness center and spa round out the offerings.

F ZEEN ATHENS
Occupying five restored 19th-century buildings featuring Bauhaus, Art Deco and Neoclassical design, this 5-star boutique hotel invites guests to quiet moments of retreat amid the energy of the city. Enjoy the spa, library, restaurant and lounge, and rooftop garden with Acropolis views.

DINING

Perched atop The Atheneum hotel, this refined restaurant invites guests to indulge in sophisticated Greek-Mediterranean dishes while admiring the panoramic view of city landmarks. Signature dishes include lamb kleftiko and braised free-range rooster.

A gastronomic gem in the heart of Athens, Stone serves up Mediterranean fare for a healthy breakfast, scrumptious brunch and delightful dinner, accompanied by exquisite wines and cocktails and a view of the Acropolis. Dine indoors or out and expect superb, friendly service.

Varoulko Seaside Restaurant
Culinary excellence meets stunning coastal views at this restaurant helmed by Michelin- awarded chef Lefteris Lazarou. Using only the freshest ingredients, menus are based around the catch of the day, with sea bass, red mullet, grouper, tuna and shrimp appearing regularly.

ATTRACTIONS
Athenian Riviera
You may not think of Athens as a seaside destination, but the Athens coastline offers a bounty of beautiful beaches minutes from city center. Easily reach the sandy shores, quiet coves, playful beach clubs and seaside dining by taking the Athens Tram, Metro or taxi.

The Great Archaeological Walk
The beautifully landscaped pedestrian zone links significant sites including the Acropolis, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, Theatre of Dionysus and others. Experience the extraordinary juxtaposition of the modern city and ancient monuments as you walk through historic districts.

National Gardens of Athens
The former Royal Garden now offers a 38- acre green oasis of rare flora and fauna in the heart of the city. Wander shady pathways along picturesque ponds and admire more than 500 plant species, intertwined with ancient ruins and inhabited by hundreds of species of birds, fish and turtles. Also on site: a botanical museum, café and library.

GT PICKS
Contributor Irene Rawlings suggests visiting the Acropolis when it opens to beat crowds. Don’t miss jewel-box Benaki Museum’s rooftop restaurant. Stop for baklava ice cream at Patisserie Artemis. Take in sweeping city views from Renzo Piano-designed Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. Sip ouzo at historic Brettos Distillery. Stay at Hotel Grande Bretagne or design-forward Monsieur Didot.

Writer Eugenia Lazaris said Cape Sounion, about 40 miles from Athens, is a can’t-miss. Home to the Temple of Poseidon, which sits perched on a cliff overlooking the Aegean, it offers the best place to catch the sunset.
