Get ready for the Rio 2016 Olympics sooner rather than later — tickets to events promise to go fast. While modern competitors will contend for the gold in 42 separate sports, Brazil’s history is filled with sporting connections. The country’s first official sailing regatta took place in 1851 in Botafogo Bay, in the waters between the Botafogo ferry bridge and the Praia Vermelha fortress. Decades later, the Flamengo and Fluminense football teams faced off for the first time in 1912 — and the rivalry continues to this day in a competition known as Fla-Flu.

Here’s how the Rio competition zones are organized:

• Deodoro: Aquatics center, Deodoro Stadium, equestrian center, hockey, shooting center and youth arena. In this zone’s X-Park, visitors will find the mountain bike center, BMX center and whitewater stadium
•  Barra: Barra Olympic Park and Riocentro exhibition complex, tennis, Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre, aquatics stadium, Olympic Village and press center, Olympic golf course and Pontal venue
•  Maracanã: Opening and closing ceremonies and football matches at Maracanã stadium; archery and carnival parade at Sambódromo
•  Copacabana: Beach volleyball arena, marathon swimming, triathlon, para-triathlon, Olympic cycling road race and Paralympic marathon events; Lagoa Stadium will host rowing, canoe sprint and para-canoe events, while sailing competition will be held in the nearby waters at Marina da Glória
