The grounding this week of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliners spread in a domino effect around the world as aviation authorities followed the lead of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s order instructing U.S. carriers to pull the aircraft out of service pending a complete investigation. The move follows a series of mechanical glitches including a battery-related fire in Boston on a Dreamliner owned by Japan Airlines and the emergency landing of an ANA-owned Dreamliner in Japan.
Following the FAA action, Jim McNerney, Boeing’s chairman, president and CEO, assured travelers that safety is the company’ first priority.
“The safety of passengers and crew members who fly aboard Boeing airplanes is our highest priority,” McNerney said. “Boeing is committed to supporting the FAA and finding answers as quickly as possible … We are confident the 787 is safe and we stand behind its overall integrity.”
While news of the grounding may be unsettling, members of Global Traveler’s Globility Board, a consortium of frequent flyers representative of the magazine’s readership, took the action in stride.
“The FAA and Boeing are being extra cautious,” said Benjamin DeLee. “Such bumps are to be expected with a new plane. It will not affect any immediate travel plans, and I will have no qualms about flying on the plane when it’s cleared.”
Tom Linhard, of Denver, Colo., expressed dismay, especially in light of previous delays in the delivery of the Dreamliner, but said the action was “not totally unexpected given the complexity of the aircraft.”
A frequent flyer with United Airlines, the only U.S. carrier currently operating the Dreamliner, Linhard is hopeful the mechanical glitches will be ironed out quickly as he’s looking forward to United’s planned late-March launch of non-stop Dreamliner service between Denver and Tokyo.
Steven White, vice president sales and marketing for Kuhn Rikon Corp., flew from Houston to Los Angeles on board a United Dreamliner last week.
“The plane was quiet; the lighting and larger windows were definitely an improvement,” said White. “The flight took place during some of the issues … but it was full and the trip was without incident.
“As far as my future travel plans, I look forward to flying again on the 787.”
