While 2016 offered limited perks for frequent flyers, things are looking up in 2017. Skift compiled a list of things frequent flyers can look forward to in the New Year, as competition continues to grow within both the airline and credit card industries.
- Alaska Airlines will remain an industry leader in loyalty programs, maintaining its distance-based qualification Mileage Plan, while other airlines are transitioning to revenue-based loyalty programs, which award most travelers fewer miles. Additionally, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members now enjoy reduced mileage redemption, can earn more miles when flying with select partners, and elite members are now eligible for complimentary upgrades on award travel. The new partnership between Alaska Airlines and Virgin America also allows members to earn miles on both airlines.
- One thing that will remain the same going into 2017 is the close relationship between the credit card and travel industries. American Express and Chase aggressively pursued business travelers in 2016, each offering significant point bonuses for card signups. These bonuses will continue in the New Year.
- As a result of the airline industry’s 2016 push for more revenue, premium seat prices are at a record low. Prior to 2016, airlines sold first-class tickets at a high price and upgraded elites into open seats at the time of flight. In 2016, the model changed to selling more seats at a much lower price and upgrading fewer elites. This model doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon.
- International competition and the airline industry’s pursuit of revenue led to wide investment in international premium-economy classes, and the rollout of these new cabins will continue in the New Year. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines launched premium sections, which run on international routes. These cabins allow frequent flyers with a flexible but not lavish expense account to travel more comfortably on long-haul flights.
- Finally, 2017 will see continued competition among airlines for best international business-class offerings. The highlight of 2016 was the unveiling of United Airlines’ Polaris business class, which offers lie-flat seats and aisle access on each flight. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines are also upgrading their premium products and services, which means frequent flyers can likely look forward to increased space and comfort on all flights in the coming year.
