Finnair introduced a new digital tool to allow guests to confirm their coronavirus certificates prior to the journey. Available as of Dec. 3 for travelers from Finland to destinations like Belgium, Czech Republic, Austria, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland, other destinations will be added at a later date, expected early next year.

“The tool is designed to make travelling smoother for our customers, as they can go directly to bag drop or via security check to the boarding gate, without having to show their corona certificates at the airport. They can also travel with more peace of mind, as they already know in advance that their documents are confirmed,” stated Sami Suokas, responsible for airport customer processes at Finnair.

The service digitalizes parts of the current paper documentation system for corona-related travel document management and checks at airports. Travelers flying through Finnair can confirm they have the corona certificates as part of the check-in online or through the Finnair app. After this step, customers will get a “clear to travel” confirmation accompanied with an online boarding pass.

While no certificate checks are needed at the airport with this service, authorities may still check documents upon arrival. Customers should be prepared to present these documents for entry. Early next year, the service will add an upload functionality so the service can be available for more customers and destinations.
