In conjunction with Finland’s upcoming centennial anniversary, Finnair is preparing for the celebration.

The carrier launches three food collaborations for its onboard meals, intended to promote Finland’s healthy and hearty food culture. The meals are done in cooperation with the ELO Foundation — an association dedicated to the promotion of Finnish food culture.

The menus are broken down into three long-haul flight categories: business-class flights leaving Helsinki (HEL); business-class flights to Helsinki; and economy class.

For business-class customers on long-haul flights out of Helsinki Oct. 4–Jan. 9, Finnair’s signature menu chef created an exclusive 100-year themed menu. The menu features delicacies such as Baltic herring, a Karelian stew and a cep mushroom soup flavored with cured elk.

“When creating Finnair’s centennial menu, I reflected on what Finland and its food culture represent for me, said Eero Vottonen, signature menu chef, Finnair. “It’s a big honor for me to collaborate with Finnair on this initiative and I’m excited to have the opportunity to introduce the tastes of Finland to thousands of passengers traveling through Finland with Finnair.”

Business-class customers traveling to Helsinki on most long-haul flights Oct. 4–Jan. 9, will be offered elements inspired by the Finland 100-year menu. Variations of the ELO Foundation’s 100-year menu will be served at Finnish embassies around the world to commemorate Finland’s centennial celebration.

For economy-class customers on long-haul flights through Jan. 9, Finnair partnered with the ELO Foundation and the Cygnaeus elementary school in Turku to create meals promoting Finland’s healthy and tasty school meals. The country is world renowned for its excellent school system, which includes a free school meal for all children grades one to nine, and those students in high schools and trade schools.

The meals selected by students from the Cygnaeus School in Turku are traditional Finnish favorites like potatoes, meatballs and macaroni and meat casserole. Students chose the meals during a workshop at the carrier’s catering premises and they were tailored to fit the aircraft environment.

Finnair will also celebrate the country’s centennial by offering rye bread and Karelian pies during the meal service onboard its long-haul flights, as both items were in the top three when nearly 50,000 natives voted to determine Finland’s national food.
