Despite its modest size within a colorful box canyon, the mountain town of Telluride, Colo., packs in plenty of festival options between Memorial Day weekend and the end of the year. Among the offerings: Mountainfilm documentary film festival (May 27–30) kicks things off with film, community events, interactive talks and outdoor programming. The 33rd Annual Telluride Balloon Festival (June 3–5) takes to the peaked skies at sunrise, sailing into the valley. The last night includes Glow, a display of inflated balloons along Main Street. Over summer solstice weekend (June 16–19), the 43rd Annual Bluegrass Festival brings together artists including Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Neil Finn, Leftover Salmon, Punch Brothers and the Sam Bush Band. Vintners and wine aficionados from around the globe will gather for the Telluride Wine Festival (June 23–26), with scheduled events including Toast of Telluride, Winemaker Dinners and The Highest Grand Tasting in North America. Along with Grammy Award winners and little known super groups, the Telluride Jazz Festival (Aug. 5–7) will feature guest of honor John Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen. Blues takes over during Telluride Blues & Brews (Sept. 16–18), when the streets are filled with blues, funk, jam bands, indie, rock, gospel and soul artists, plus crafts, late night shows and refreshment from 50 of the country’s top microbreweries. Automobile enthusiasts gather for Telluride Festival of Cars & Colors (Sept. 29–Oct. 2). In its second year, the event is a celebration of luxury car restorations, vintage cars and exotic vehicles.

May 6, 2024Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History
All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.

May 1, 2024One of Hawai’i’s Most Popular (and Controversial) Attractions Being Demolished
If you haven’t actually climbed them, you’ve seen beautiful photos of them at one time or another: Hawai’i’s Stairway to Heaven, located on Oahu. The 3,922-step hike ascends Koolau Mountain Range and has been illegal to hike since 1987. But this has not stopped travelers and locals from doing so, even with a steep fine of $1,000 for trespassing.
