The Federal Aviation Administration has approved a Boeing proposal to correct battery issues on the 787 Dreamliner. Boeing will begin testing the proposed fixes while the FAA continues its safety investigation.

Boeing’s proposal is a three-part initiative: improved design features to prevent battery failure; enhanced testing during the production process; and an enclosure system designed to prevent an overheated battery from affecting other aircraft equipment and mechanisms. Successful completion of each step within the plan is required before the FAA will allow commercial 787 flights to resume.

“Our team has been working around the clock to understand the issues and develop a solution based on extensive analysis and testing following the events that occurred in January,” said Jim McNerney, Boeing chairman, president and CEO. “[The] approval from the FAA is a critical and welcome milestone toward getting the fleet flying again and continuing to deliver on the promise of the 787.”
