The United States Federal Aviation Authority issued an agreement aiming to make flying easier for families, allow for faster check-in and overall make airports safer. Among the provisions, the FAA agreement says airlines must sit children 13 years and younger with their parents and guardians for no additional fee. Parents will no longer have to ask passengers to switch seats if they’re not already sitting near their kids. In addition, the agreement agrees to expand TSA PreCheck to speed up the check-in process. It also tightens the vetting process for airport employees who have access to secure areas, perhaps in response to recent terrorism scares. These issuances are part of the Reauthorization Bill that funds the FAA until September 2017. It was a largely popular passage, lauded by travel agents and lawmakers like South Dakota Senator John Thune who said it is “one of the most passenger-friendly FAA reauthorization bills we’ve seen, literally, in a generation.” What impact will the bill have on airlines like Sprint, Southwest and Frontier, which currently allow passengers to choose seats in advance only by paying a fee? Without payment, passengers take seats or are assigned them at random during check-in. The new provisions for seating kids with parents may change that process. Consumers may be disappointed to hear other provisions, such as the prevention of unreasonable fees and minimum legroom standards, did not make the cut.
