Of course, there are plenty of spectacular castles within easy distance of Munich, worth an entire day all by themselves. The most popular of these is Neuschwanstein, a fairytale palace built in the late 1800s by a former Bavarian sovereign. The drive is a little less than two hours. For adventurers, the Zugspitze earns a daytrip. Germany’s highest peak, it’s also only about a two-hour drive from Munich. Climb or ride to the top for views of more than 400 other peaks in the surrounding four countries, or enjoy the snow sports available six months of the year. In the summer, hiking and climbing are popular. A little further away, at about three hours’ drive, is Bamberg, or the Little Venice of Germany. The entire town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, prospering highly in the 12^th century and a center of enlightenment in the 1700s. Many of the town’s medieval buildings are still in existence today.
