Very-last-minute shoppers looking for a travel deal may have hit the jackpot on Christmas Day when a system error led to Etihad Airways listing ticket prices as low as $187 for flights between New York (JFK) and Abu Dhabi (AUH).
Embedded in a ticket promotion in the United States, the error also affected pricing for connecting flights, making bargain-basement fares available to travel through Abu Dhabi to other Etihad gateways including Johannesburg (JNB).
While Etihad has not commented on the number of tickets purchased at the deeply discounted prices, some reports suggest the low fares were on offer for as long as 20 hours. Etihad Airways says it will honor the discounted tickets.
Delta Air Lines experienced a similar situation in December 2013 when a system glitch showed ticket prices as low as $40 round-trip for travel between New York and Los Angeles (LAX). Delta also honored the discounted fares.
