Three hundred years ago, the Elector of Saxony — known as Augustus the Strong — commissioned an order of porcelain so fine it would rival the Chinese creations he regularly imported. Manufacturing soon began in a Gothic castle-turned factory overlooking the Elbe River in Meissen and a worldwide obsession was born.
Today, the legendary porcelain is still produced in Meissen, though operations are no longer castle-centric. Commissions from royalty and prominent European families continue, though a design line of home furnishings, architectural interiors and jewelry now supplement the original porcelain creations. Well-loved designs such as the 1939 Royal Blossom collection are featured, and items range from bridal wear and silk scarves to rugs, mirrors and pillows.
See Augustus the Strong’s personal collection of Meissen white gold animals, early Meissen examples, and favorite porcelain pieces dating to the Ming Dynasty and Emperor Xangxi on display in Dresden at the Zwinger museum palace complex. New York architect Peter Marino designed the exhibition.
