Focusing on 20th-century indigenous artists Edward S. Curtis, Marianne Nicolson, Tracy Rector and Will Wilson, the new exhibition titled “Double Exposure” is on view at the Seattle Art Museum through Sept. 9.

The core exhibition centers on the work of Edward S. Curtis, celebrated as one of the most powerful photographers of the American West and its indigenous populations.

More than 150 photos are on view — including a collection of lantern slides illustrating his multimedia presentations — along with audio field recordings created on wax cylinders and his feature film In the Land of the Head Hunters (1914), a docudrama shot in British Columbia.

A number of events are planned in conjunction with the exhibition, including a showing of Through Her Eyes: Indigenous Shorts created by Native American female directors, curated by Longhouse Media and artist Tracy Rector on July 11; and Summer Institute for Educators: Indigenous Voices: Past, Present, Future, a three-day intensive workshop with local artists and experts.
