Delta Air Lines launches phase one of its test program to enhance the gate experience and streamline the boarding process, part of a three-month pilot project at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

At gates T1, T2 and T3, the following will be deployed: handle-held nomad devices allowing gate agents to make seat changes, check bag status and more while freeing agents to more easily engage with customers; mobile agent pods opening up space at the gate for more efficient boarding and additional seating; boarding pillars that create four parallel lanes to enhance organization and provide customers a clear path; and E-Gates enabling passengers to seamlessly and efficiently self-board by scanning their smartphone or boarding pass.

Later this year, phase two will focus on increased agent mobility, the customer’s digital experience at the gate and how to integrate biometric boarding based on testing at Reagan National Airport. These developments accelerate the culture of hospitability by minimizing barriers between gate agents and passengers.

The gate and boarding enhancements are the latest examples of the airline’s investments in innovation. Over the past year, the carrier led the industry on a number of customer solutions.
