In collaboration with the Israel Antiquities Authority, the California Science Center will present Dead Sea Scrolls: The Exhibition, the largest and most comprehensive showing of the scrolls outside of Israel. The exhibition includes sections of the oldest known copies of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), first discovered by a goat herder in 1947 in a series of caves located on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea near Khirbet Qumran. The exhibit is accompanied by the Benedict Cumberbatch-narrated film Jerusalem 3D in the center’s IMAX theater.

The highlights of the multimedia exhibit’s ancient artifacts are 20 scrolls — 10 of which will be on view at any time on a rotating schedule — including texts from Genesis, Isaiah and Psalms. Also on display: a section from a marriage contract, a collection of small stone boxes called ossuaries that were used to store human bones, pottery, coins, weapons, a selection of jewelry, a gold and pearl earring dating to at least 2,000 years ago, arrowheads from a brutal, long-ago battle waged at Lachish, and an enormous stone from the Western Wall in Jerusalem.
