Coastal Affairs: Plan Your Next Meeting in Elegant Copenhagen

When it comes to an unfailing talent for identifying prime real estate, you’ve got to hand it to the Vikings. The long-ago fishing village they established at the site of present-day Copenhagen continues to draw a steady influx of visitors, including those with business on their minds. With its lovely, colorful Nyhavn waterfront lined with multihued townhouses and clusters of spires rising into the salt-laced air, the city provides a memorable setting for meetings and conferences.

If atmosphere is a priority, the historical Admiral Gjeddes Gaard house proves the address to consider for your next power gathering. Dating to the 18th century, this listed building has long hosted meetings and assemblies that included such Danish luminaries as poet and literary critic Tom Kristensen and philosopher-writer Ludvig Holberg. Among the available spaces are The Office, The Library, Holbergsalen hall and Digterkroen room. The beamed ceiling in the Digterkroen room hints of its past as “the poet’s pub,” while oak tables and deep leather chairs add to the sense of comfort and charm.

You’ll find more sense of place at Moltke’s Palace, a restored mansion located downtown that’s also certified by environmental group Green Key. Rooms of varying dimensions include Store Festsal ballroom, with plaster stuccos by sculptors including The Little Mermaid artist Edvard Eriksen, and Gyldne Sal room, decorated with murals by Danish artist Bjørn Nørgaard. The property also offers a selection of smaller salons and an on-site kitchen team available to help with meal planning.

Far more modern — and centrally located in the Vesterbro neighborhood — Tivoli Hotel & Congress Center is also within a stroll of Tivoli Gardens; Central Station; City Hall Square; and the icy baths at Kalvebod Brygge, Fisketorvet and the Islands Brygge. The 43,056 square feet of thoroughly innovative meeting space includes options for live-streaming and WebEx conferences. The 55 meeting rooms range in size from seating for six to space for 450 attendees, while Tivoli Congress Hall has capacity for up to 2,400 people. There’s also a team of event managers on hand to assist with all aspects of planning, from inception to realization. The adjacent hotel offers 679 rooms in nine different categories, with rooms on the top floors providing views of the city and harbor.

No discussion of Copenhagen’s many illustrious meeting choices is complete without Hotel d’Angleterre. Grand, impressive and offering the perfect blend of modern luxuries and historical stateliness, this central hotel has hosted a distinguished list of dignitaries and celebrities including Alfred Hitchcock, Walt Disney and Oprah Winfrey; and more than a few historic meetings and events. Your meeting attendees will love the location, across from Royal Opera, Charlottenborg Palace, and Kongens Nytorv square and the adjacent pedestrian zone. Large meeting spaces with opulent details include the Louis XVI Ballroom and the Palm Court Ballroom. In addition to these bigger rooms, there’s an impressive selection of smaller gathering spaces such as The Empire and Gallery, similarly equipped with state-of-the-art technology features. Whatever the size, the property’s meeting planners can help organize a smooth event, including assistance with guestrooms if overnight accommodations are part of your plans.

UNIQUE VENUES

Copenhagen is ardent about coffee, and small meetings with a potential colleague or business partner are the perfect opportunity to show off your insider knowledge of the city’s deep- rooted coffee culture and cozy hygge lifestyle. Multiple kaffeepauses during the day are often accompanied by excellent pastries (locally called wienerbrød, not “Danish”) or light lunch fare that includes smørrebrød — Denmark’s ubiquitous, delicious open-faced sandwiches. If a casual setting is conducive to your business plans, consider these locations:

Located in Nørrebrogade, the sleek, minimalist-but-cozy Andersen & Maillard café serves up a menu of exceptional coffees roasted on the property. Better still, pastry chef Milton Abel creates delectable pastries and freshly baked breads served with home-churned butter. Make the roastery and coffeehouse part of a grander design to charm business associates with an array of delicacies created at Andersen & Maillard’s own artisan bakery.

The Soundtrack café boasts an eclectic, colorful décor. This beloved institution in the Nørrebro district comes with a menu of excellent coffees and plenty of treats. Albums and art line the walls, and a DJ often spins vinyl for an authentically groovy vibe.

Spread over three floors, including a hygge-worthy basement level with a fireplace, The Living Room downtown coffeehouse is a local tradition. Wood tables, sofas and overstuffed armchairs create an inviting and relaxing atmosphere, while a heady selection of sweet treats augments the menu of coffee and other drinks.

Althoff Grand Hotel Schloss Bensberg Review

After a long drive from our previous destination, it was a relief to see Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg in our view. When we pulled into the hotel court, I felt like we were pulling up to a royal palace. Considering the hotel was originally built as a castle for Prince Elector Johann Wilhelm II of Duesseldorf and his wife, Maria-Luisa of the Medici family, my thought wasn’t that far off.
