Changi Airport is one of the largest transportation hubs in Southeast Asia, currently rated the World’s Best Airport by Skytrax for the fifth consecutive year. It is also one of the world’s busiest, seeing some of the highest passenger numbers per year in the world.
Earlier this month, the airport announced its new Terminal 4 will commence operations Oct. 31 following a massive renovation and expansion project. The new terminal will add a capacity of 16 million passengers per year, bringing the total annual handling capacity to 82 million passengers.
To ensure a smooth transition of flight operations from the existing terminals, the operation of the T4 airlines will shift over one week on the following dates:
- Tuesday, Oct. 31: Cathay Pacific Airways and Korean Air
- Thursday, Nov. 2: Cebu Pacific Air and Spring Airlines
- Tuesday, Nov. 7: AirAsia Group and Vietnam Airlines
Cathay Pacific will operate the first arriving and departing flights at T4.
Since October 2016, Changi Airport Group collaborated with partners to test and prepare the new terminal for flight operations including the Fast and Seamless Travel self-service options at check-in, bag drop, immigration, boarding, security screening, baggage handling and more.
Tan Lye Teck, executive vice president, Changi Airport Group, said, “The past months have been a very crucial period for us as we conducted intensive tests and trials, not only to ensure that the systems work well, but also to understand how passengers navigate the new terminal, including interacting with initiatives such as FAST which may be less familiar to them.”
The airport, including the new terminal, will have 400 retail and service stores, as well as 140 food and beverage outlets.
According to Yahoo News Singapore, a fifth terminal at Changi will be ready in the mid-2020s, and will handle 50 million passengers per year.
