Though the Zika virus — and its possible birth defects — are still making headlines daily, the Centers for Disease Control last month lifted a warning in four Latin American cities.
The CDC says these destinations are at a “minimal risk” for the Zika virus because of their high altitudes; the disease-carrying mosquitoes live only in humid climates, and these elevations are dry.
Mexico City, Mexico; Quito, Ecuador; La Paz, Bolivia; and Bogota, Columbia, have been removed from the CDC’s travel warnings as they sit at 6,5000 feet or above.
No vaccines currently exist for the Zika virus, which is thought to cause severe birth defects, though because its symptoms are otherwise mild, many people don’t realize they carry it. The CDC warned travelers who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as men who have traveled to an area with Zika and have a pregnant partner, to take precautions when traveling to or having recently traveled to a range of areas in the Caribbean, Central America, the Pacific Islands and South America.

ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: Philadelphia was filling up with travelers, so I booked Kimpton Hotel Palomar due to its location in the heart of Center City — just off Samson Street, full of great restaurants, and a few blocks from The Union League (where I was attending an event) and City Hall. I parked around the corner; there are many options, and the hotel is also close to public transportation. I admired the lobby renovations that took place not too long ago, making this a hidden gem with a real Philadelphia feel. The doorman greeted me and held my bags, as I arrived in the morning for meetings before check- in. When I returned in the afternoon, check-in was swift with a friendly front desk team offering water and help with questions.
