You heard it here: Oct. 14, 2 p.m., the waterfront of Windsor and Falmouth, Nova Scotia, will be filled with giant, hollowed-out pumpkins and their pilots, competing in the 19th annual Pumpkin Regatta.

Afloat in what the official website describes as PVCs, or personal vegetable crafts, participants will row across Lake Pesaquid, navigating a 564-yard course, made challenging (and highly entertaining) considering it’s not exactly an environment suited to pumpkin canoes. Each unwieldy and unlikely craft weigh upwards of 600 pounds, not distributed in any even way — adding to their lack of maneuverability and the likelihood of capsizing.

A full day of activities accompanies the brightly colored race, starting with the Pumpkin Seed Long Distance Challenge, in which Nova Scotian paddlers engage in canoe and kayak sprints on the lake.

Throughout the day, miniature train rides are available at Trecothic Creek and Windsor Railway; while live music and vendors can be found along the Windsor waterfront. Other water competitions include a Dragon Boat Paddle to open the regatta, races in the Motorized and Experimental Class, plus a Paddling Class.

Musical performances will also take place at the Sam Slick Coach House on Route 12, with an awards presentation at 3:30 p.m.
