The new Hotel Calimala Milano will soon open in Milano’s historic and vibrant Porta Venezia district. After overseeing the original Hotel Calimala in Florence, Tel Aviv-based architect and designer Alex Meitlis created a distinct new look for the brand’s sister property in Milano. Meitlis designed the 88 guestrooms with sleek, clean lines, and shades of clay-pink, citrus orange and mint-blue, completing the rooms with custom-made furnishings and unique lighting crafted from local materials. On the ground floor, a wine and coffee bar with an outdoor terrace is now open, and the rooftop swimming pool and bar, one of the few rooftop pools in the city, opens in spring when the weather is nicer. Also opening in spring is rooftop restaurant FIVE, featuring a Mediterranean-inspired menu crafted by hotel chef Moshiko Gamilali. Room service is also available, with breakfast served on the fifth floor.
The meticulously designed rooms include six room types: single, superior, deluxe, comfort, terrace suite and the penthouse suite, where guests experience the ambiance that symbolizes the dynamic spirit of Milano’s nearby Centro Storico.

With interior photography curated by noted paper artist Carmel Ilan, Hotel Calimala Milano embodies a fresh aesthetic inspired by the unique character of the city. The hotel’s design reflects a Total Design Project, in which everything, including furniture, lighting and art, has been custom-made for the property.
The historic Porta Venezia area is known today as the LGBTQIA+-friendly Rainbow District of Milano. Via Lecco and its surroundings have many LGBTQIA+-themed bars and restaurants. In 2019, after a commercial advertisement campaign by Netflix Italia for the 2018 Milan Pride event, Milano’s current Mayor Giuseppe Sala announced the Porta Venezia metro station would become Rainbow Station thanks to the agreement with the city’s ATM metro service.
