Business Travelers Weigh in on Tech in New Study

A new study released by Carlson Wagonlit Travel shows business travelers use more tech devices than ever, tying directly into productivity.

The survey found the average traveler carries four different types of technology devices at once (ranging from laptops to mobile phones to tablets) and the most valuable of these tools is the mobile phone, with 80 percent relying on such a device to conduct business.

A large majority (88 percent) of travelers find technology makes travel easier to navigate, with half or more relying on online resources to plan hotel stays and air travel. Likewise, airline and hotel apps are some of the primary apps used while traveling, as are map apps.

Many business travelers find technology makes staying connected with family and friends easier, with most using international calling to stay in touch (44 percent), and others using Skype (24 percent) and text (17 percent).

“The business traveler can be so much more productive than even five years ago thanks to technology. Think about the advances where a business traveler used to have so much down time between a flight, taxi and hotel. Now, they can log in and work while on the plane or wherever they happen to be. With the continued emergence of the tablet, as well as numerous apps, travelers don’t feel out of touch as they carry out business,” said Simon Nowroz, chief marketing officer, Carlson Wagonlit Travel.

Overall, the surveyed travelers found business travel a positive aspect of their career. Perks of business travel cited include the ability to build new knowledge and perspective (86 percent) and increased productivity overall (80 percent). The only significant downsides? Maintaining health and wellness routines (54 percent) and safety concerns (46 percent).
